Stories Of Volunteerism

Big Brothers, Big SistersMaking a difference in a “BIG” way

Did you know that just “hanging out” can make a huge difference in a child’s life?
2nd Lt. Warren Watts II of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines Regiment knows that. In fact, it’s one reason he chose to become a “big brother.”

Watts recently became a big brother through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern North Carolina. He was matched with Nicholas Cozzens, 11, and they’ve been spending quality “hang-out” time together ever since.

HorseSenseHorseSense helps local families communicate better

Perhaps you’ve heard of the horse whisperer — someone who can communicate well with horses and modify their behavior to desired outcomes.

But did you know horses sometimes whisper to kids and parents?

Horsewoman Kristen Gahl is harnessing the power of horses and volunteers to help local families communicate better through her organization called Coastal Carolina HorseSense, Inc.

Poker RunSuccessful poker run nets goodwill, funds for Hope for the Warriors

It’s not always about the cards you are dealt, but how you play them.

About 135 motorcycle riders gathered in spite of intermittent rain showers, at Fast Freddy’s Sports Bar and Grill on Lejeune Boulevard Saturday morning to enhance the lives of service members wounded in the Global War on Terrorism. Their support helped raise $10,000 for Hope for the Warriors.

Thus began the 2nd Annual Hope for the Warriors Poker Run. --> Read More

Toys For Tots‘Tis the season: Toys for Tots campaign kicks off on Lejeune

Underneath a huge Christmas tree beautifully-decorated with all the delights of the season, the 60th Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots toy drive kicked off Friday morning at the Marine Corps Exchange aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

This year’s Toys for Tots Coordinator 1st Sgt. Dwight D. Jones, inspector-instructor 1st sergeant for Company F, 4th Tank Battalion, began the ceremony with some brief comments.

Col. Adele E. Hodges, Marine Corps Base commander, gave the keynote address. “This is something we do to give back,” she said. “Hopefully, we will collect enough toys so that we can satisfy the needs of our local community.”

Land NavigationBrewster Middle School: Geography lesson navigates the curriculum

What do pirate maps and United States Marine land navigation have in common?
They are both a part of the curriculum for 7th grade geography students at Brewster Middle School aboard Camp Lejeune.

Recently, students in Athy Lionikis’ 7th grade “Fox Team” geography class have been studying longitude and latitude as well as map reading skills. As part of their study, Lionikis asked the students to create pirate maps to spark their creativity.

BrithavenBrithaven offers the opportunity to make a difference through the generations

Margaret Mead once said everyone needs to have access to both grandparents and grandchildren in order to be a full human being.

The staff at Britthaven, a nursing care facility on White Street in Jacksonville, are aware of this phenomena. Thus they are always looking for a few good Marines, sailors and military family members to volunteer at their facility.

“To volunteer here, it’s an easy process. There is a background check, application [and] one-hour orientation. It’s a short process and then you’re off and running,” said Allysha Koury, activities director. --> Read More

Sea OatsPlanting effort preserves beach

A few good Marines and sailors were sowing their wild oats …sea oats, that is.
Approximately 40 volunteers, both military and civilian, came together on a training area at Onslow beach Friday to plant sea oats, a native, warm season grass, in an effort to protect the beach from erosion by keeping the sand dunes intact.

The effort was spearheaded by the Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune Environmental Conservation Branch. The Environmental Conservation Branch also handles the base hunting and fishing program, wildlife and fish-pond management, other soil conservation programs and nuisance wildlife issues, among other programs, aboard base. --> Read More

What is Operation Noble Heart?

The Jacksonville and Onslow County residents have proudly supported the military community through their volunteer efforts. Because of their support and unselfish giving of their time and sweat equity, the active duty service members and their families have been afforded programs and services that have improved their quality of life. It is because of this unselfishness that Operation Noble Heart has been created.

Operation Noble Heart is designed to encourage active duty service members, family members, and the civilian employees to perform volunteer work for charitable organization in the local community.

How Can I Participate in Operation Noble Heart?

The process is simple; all you have to do is contact Ms. Robin Karratti, Administrative Support Specialist for the Single Marine Program. Ms. Karratti’s contact information can be found on the right side of this web page. Once registered, download your volunteer form and you can begin volunteering at what charity you feel is important to you. For your convenience, we have identified a number of charities that are continuously looking for volunteers and that information can be found under the organizations section of this page. As you complete your volunteering, just submit your form to Ms. Karratti and she will log your hours. It is that simple. Volunteer for as many or little hours as you wish. What ever time you commit, makes a dramatic impact to those organizations and the surrounding community. You can volunteer as an individual or as a team.
