Post-9/11 GI Bill Transferability
The Post-9/11 GI Bill allows service members (officer or enlisted, active duty or Selected Reserve), on or after August 1, 2009, to transfer unused education benefits to immediate family members (spouse and children). The service member must have at least
six years of service, and commit to an additional four years of service in order to transfer benefits to a spouse or child.
All Marines and family members should read MarAdmin 428/11 for the Roles and Responsibilities. Because of the potential impact of this benefit on recruiting and retention, transferability policy is determined by the Department of Defense services.

Road Map for Success
Many veterans and active duty personnel can qualify for more than one education benefits program, including the:
- Post-9/11 GI Bill (chapter 33)
- Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB, chapter 30 and chapter 1606)
- Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP, chapter 1607)
- Post Vietnam Era Veterans' Educational Assistance program (VEAP, chapter 32).
Depending on your individual circumstances, one of these programs may give you better benefits than the others. While you are the only person who can choose which program meets your needs, the VA has developed a step-by-step process that may help you compare the different education programs and decide which is best for you.
