Unsung Hero Award - Tim Hines

Unsung Hero Award

On January 12, 2012, Tim Hines of the Marketing Division, Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS), Camp Lejeune, received the Unsung Hero Award. Tim created the Sexual Assault Prevention & Response (SAPR) website that has become the model for all others; brought to the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) a marketing piece that aided in the record setting year for the CFC; and created a webpage for the Energy Conservation Awareness Month campaign which has been described as phenomenal. As Tim quietly goes about the business of making others around him look good he is enthusiastically recognized as an Unsung Hero to us all.

Retail Division Main Exchange Overnight Reset Crew

Unsung Hero Award

On December 7, 2011 the Retail Division Main Exchange Overnight Reset Crew received the Team Achievement Award for their long hours putting together, moving and securing new fixtures in the renovated Main Exchange. 

Working three shifts, weekends and weekdays, they completed the work while the Main Exchange was closed, with no inconvenience to customers, allowing the store to be unrestricted for shoppers and reducing losses that could have occurred if work was done during opened hours.

With heavy lifting and ingenuity in maneuvering very large fixtures, the crew was amazing and stayed on task following the renovation plan without a hiccup.

Their devotion and hard work have made the Main Exchange Overnight Reset Crew valuable members of Marine Corps Community Services, Camp Lejeune.

Clubs & Catering Division 236th Marine Corps Birthday Ball Staff

Unsung Hero Award

On December 7, 2011, the Clubs & Catering Division Marine Corps Birthday Ball Staff received the Team Achievement Award for their outstanding preparation and execution of the 236th Marine Corps Birthday Ball event. 

The attractive and creative table settings immediately struck a harmonious chord with all who entered the exquisitely decorated Tinian Room. All attendees appreciated the caliber of the bar service during the reception, which included not only friendly service but remarkably nimble drink preparation.

After the enjoyable ceremonial portion of the evening, which took place on the beautiful back lawn of Marston Pavilion, the meal service began which delighted and pleased all those in attendance. The speed, with which the staff members served the meals, as well as the quality of the food, impressed all ballgoers. Many remarked that it was the “best Ball” they had ever attended.

Their professional service and the obvious pride taken in their work make the Clubs & Catering Division Staff of the 236th Birthday of the Marine Corps Ball valuable members of Marine Corps Community Services, Camp Lejeune.

On November 14, 2011, Tommy King of the Retail Division, Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS), Camp Lejeune, received the Unsung Hero Award.  Tommy was commended his extraordinary work performance as Material Handler Leader in the Retail Division.  Specifically, his work as a key player in the Hadnot Point move to the Main Exchange, the Main Exchange renovation and the clean-up of the Tarawa Terrace Marine Mart after Hurricane Irene, in record time, showed his responsibility for a great deal of behind the scenes hard work, that he seamlessly completed to make sure projects were done on time.  Tommy’s dedication, expertise and willingness make him a stellar member of the Retail Division.  For all these reasons, Tommy is enthusiastically recognized as an Unsung Hero to us all.

On November 18, 2011, Melissa Kenward of the Marketing Division, Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS), Camp Lejeune, received the Unsung Hero Award.  Melissa was commended for her extraordinary work performance as Marketing Specialist in the Marketing Division. Specifically, her suggestion to an employee to add a line on their out-of-office response that gave appropriate website information where upcoming events and workshops could be accessed is one of many examples that shows where she goes above and beyond when providing customer service.  She brings similar programs together and shares information as well as helps generate ideas and new concepts. Her way of doing her job with a smile and positive attitude shows she truly cares about MCCS and the customers we serve.  For all these reasons, Melissa is enthusiastically recognized as an Unsung Hero to us all.

Unsung Hero Award

On August 24, 2011, Cindy Wilder of the Human Resources Division, Marine Corps Community Services, Camp Lejeune, received the Unsung Hero Award. Cindy was commended for her extraordinary work ethic, team spirit and willingness to serve others.  She consistently performed with a positive and enthusiastic attitude resulting in a superior rapport with your customers and co-workers.

No matter, the task, she seized every opportunity to ensure that our customers receive the services they deserved and expected, providing nothing less than world-class customer service. Whether dealing with senior managers, applicants, or other customers, Cindy’s professionalism gained the respect of all whom she supported.  Her friendly smile and positive attitude served as a shining example of the type of person with whom we all enjoy working. Her dedication to the Marines, Sailors, and family members we exist to serve makes Cindy a stellar member of the Human Resources Division and an Unsung Hero to us all.

Citation Team Achievement - Maynia Maniacs

Maynia Maniacs

On July 27, 2011, the “Maynia Maniacs," received the Team Achievement Award for their valuable contributions
in designing and executing the three-day Maynia event.

The Maynia Maniacs successfully coordinated over 341 volunteer hours on behalf of the service members and family
members who enjoyed the festival, providing first-rate entertainment for over 22,000 participants. The team worked
unselfishly to maximize the caliber of their guests’ experience and, just as importantly, their safety. Because of their
superior organizational abilities, sponsors and community partners invested over $12,000 in cash sponsorship, further
enhancing an already outstanding festival event. 

Their devotion and remarkable contributions make the “Maynia Maniacs” valuable members of
Marine Corps Community Services, Camp Lejeune.

Mr. Arthur F. Purcell

Superior performance of duty in support of Marine Corps Community Services, Marine Corps Installations East from December 2005 to July 2011. During this period, Mr. Purcell managed and even created numerous funding paths for countless Marine Corps Community Services programs in support of the 34th Commandant’s challenge to transition personal and family readiness programs to a wartime footing. He seamlessly and professionally managed the formidable task of distributing appropriated funding, both regular appropriations and supplemental funding, across Marine Corps Installations East. In maximizing the amount of funds available to Marine Corps Installations East commanders for vital Marine Corps Community Services programs, the net result of his efforts had a profoundly positive and lasting impact on readiness, retention, and resilience. Mr. Purcell’s vision, leadership, and dedication reflect credit upon him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

received the Unsung Hero Award.  Joe was commended for his extraordinary work ethic, team spirit and willingness to serve other.
He has set the example for all of his co-workers by underscoring the personal nature of customer service. Joe has a remarkable skill
in identifying the specific needs of each customer to assist them quickly and provide the right product in a timely
and professional manner.His dedication and hard work made him a stellar member of the Retail Division.

On May 11, 2011, Josefina (Jo) Daniel of the Semper Fit Division, Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS), Camp Lejeune,
received the Unsung Hero Award.  Jo was commended for her extraordinary work performance in maintaining the cleanliness of the
offices located in Building 1108. Her dedication and commitment to ensuring that the building and its surroundings were maintained in
tip-top shape reflected the uncommonly high standards she set, met and even exceeded. Her work transformed Building 1108 – our weathered but well-loved home away from home – into the best workplace it could be. From touching up stairwells and repainting baseboards to scraping up dried floor wax, Jo restored the beauty to our beloved building. Her dedication to MCCS, Camp Lejeune
makes her a stellar member of the Semper Fit Division.

Ms. Michelle Guerra, Human Resources Assistant, Human Resources Division, Camp Lejeune has received the Fish Award. Michelle was commended for her extraordinary work performance in World Class Customer Service. She treats each customer, whether internal or external, as if they were the most important person in the world. She is compassionate and truly cares about the customers’ needs. She goes above and beyond in serving our customers and caters to each of their personalities. She is one of the first impressions of Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) and we are proud to say that she is one of our finest first impressions.

Unsung Hero Award - Roger Pennebaker

On March 30, 2011, Roger Pennebaker of the Review and Analysis Division, Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS), Camp Lejeune, received the Unsung Hero Award.  Roger was commended for his extraordinary work performance in preparing MCCS, Camp Lejeune
for the Payment Card Industry Audit (PCI). His tireless effort guaranteed MCCS Camp Lejeune did not receive any formal findings and improving our physical security of financial records.  From assisting with the annual inventory process to following up performance assessments, merchandise surveys, and investigative tasks, Roger exhibited heroic strength and contributed inestimable value to these processes.  His dedication and hard work made him a stellar member of the Review and Analysis Division. For all these reasons,
Roger is enthusiastically recognized as an Unsung Hero to us all.

Team Achievement - Santa's Helpers

On March 2, 2011, the “Santa’s Helpers”, received the Team Achievement for their dynamic and motivated actions to assist
thousands of customers in taking advantage of the free pictures with Santa's promotion.  

Their efforts included planning the visual concept, building Santa’s domain, coordinating promotions, providing digital photography
service, burning disks for customers, controlling the crowd, and dressing up in costumes, all in an effort to spread a little joy
and happiness during the Holiday season. 

Their dedication and commitment to giving a little something special to our military community make the “Santa’s Helpers”
valuable members of Marine Corps Community Services, Camp Lejeune.

Mr. Harold Wayne West

Superior performance of duty in support of Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune and Corps-wide from December 2008 to September 2010.  Mr. West forged the path for countless commanders in support of the Commandant’s challenge to transition personal and family readiness programs to a wartime footing. He seamlessly and professionally managed the formidable metamorphosis from military to civilian family readiness officers, influencing the policies that assisted commanders with its implementation across Marine Corps installations. The net result of his efforts had a profoundly positive and lasting impact on readiness, retention, and resilience.  Mr. West’s vision, leadership and dedication reflect credit upon him and uphold the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and United States Naval Service.

Mr. Richard L. Rhoads

Employment – Mr. Rhoads began his civilian federal service career on 15 March 1983 as a Duty Manager, PS-5, at the Consolidated Package Store on Marine Corps Air Station New River. On 14 August 1984 he was promoted to Retail Annex Operator, PS-7. Richard was re-assigned to the MCAS New River Branch Exchange as the Assistant Retail Manager UA-5. On 17 September 1995 he was promoted to Retail Area Supervisor, NF-3, at the Hadnot Point Exchange. Mr. Rhoads was re-assigned to the Hadnot Point C Store on 17 October 2004 and then back to the Hadnot Point Exchange on 20 March 2005. On 24 June 2007 he was re-assigned to the Mall Package Store and on 14 September 2008 he was re-assigned back to the Hadnot Point Exchange where he completed his civilian service, retiring effective 1 November 2010. Primary Duties – Responsible for the supervision and management of the gun section at the Hadnot Point Exchange .

Mr. Grant C. Beck – Retirement

Superior performance of duty while serving as the Paradise Point Assistant Golf Course Manager, Marine Corps Community Services, Camp Lejeune from 14 May 1995 through 31 December 2010. Mr. Beck led the planning process for the annual Intercollegiate Golf Tournament each year from 1996 through 2010. This prestigious tournament grew to be the nation’s largest intercollegiate golf tournament with thirty-two teams typically participating. Mr. Beck, who earned a class a designation from the Professional Golf Association, acted as the scorekeeper for a host of tournaments, including the Celebrity Golf Tournament, The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Tournament, and the Commanding General’s Invitational Golf Tournament. He oversaw the operations of the Paradise Point Golf Course’s cart barn, ensuring that adequate carts remained in excellent repair and available for our valued customers. He managed the Paradise Point Golf Course’s handicap system, advising the handicap committee and maintaining the integrity of the electronic system that tracks player’s handicaps, information vital to the proper execution of golf tournaments. Mr. Beck’s exceptional contributions and total dedication to duty reflected great credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
